Christian Rome

Sancta Sanctorum (Holy of Holies)

It was once the private oratory of medieval Popes, and houses the “Scala Santa” (Holy Stairs) – 28 marble steps (covered and protected by wood).  It is said these steps were brought to Rome from Jerusalem, and Jesus walked these on the day of his trial.  Worshippers can only ascend on their knees.  It also has a cloister and a museum that can be visited.

San Giovanni in Lateran

Oldest of Rome’s Basilicas and ranks 1st among them all, yes even above St. Peter’s.  Holds the title Ecumenical Mother Church.

Santa Maria Cosmedin

8th Century Church with stunning interior and beautiful Bell Tower.  Here is where we find the “Bocca della Verita” (the mouth of truth), a medieval drain cover that is said to snap shut if you are not truthful.  This is the most important Greek Church in Rome.

Catacombs

These were the burial Crypts for Christians as well as a meeting place to hold Mass.  Full of history, symbolism, galleries and frescoes.

Santa Maria Maggiore

On Esquiline Hill in Rome, the largest Church dedicated to the Virgin Mary.  This Church also holds the tomb of the great Bernini.

Ancient Appian Way (Via Sacra)

The most famous and ancient of all the roads in Rome.  Christian legend says that Peter had a vision of Christ along the Appian Way.
